Herbs (H Through O)

Hawthorn/Hagthorn/Mayflower/Whitethorn Crataegus oxyacantha. If brought into the House the Hawthorn will cause Death in the House shortly. It is an Herb of Protection, Magick, and Superstition and has long been associated with Witches and Fairies. It is used for Maypole Decorations. The Leaves and the Blossoms are potent in Fertility-increasing Spells, Fairy Magick, and Protection Spells which guard against the Evil Eye and Malevolent Supernatural Entities. The Hawthorn is protected by Elves, and they will take Revenge on those who dare to pluck it. Lightning never strikes a Hawthorn Tree, and so if you nail a Piece of Hawthorn to your House on Holy Thursday, it will never be struck by Lightning. If carried three Times around an old Hawthorn Tree, a dying Person will be made well again.

Hazel Corylus avellana. Divining Rods and Witchesí Wands that are used for drawing Circles are often made from the Wood of the Hazel. This is a highly Magickal Plant, and all Parts of it are used in Spellcraft. The Hazel is said to aid Divination, increase Fertility, attract good Luck, make Wishes come true, and protect against Fire, Lightning, and all Evils. Heather Calluna vulgaris. White Heather is considered to be very unlucky; however, all Others are said to be just the Opposite. To bring Heather into the House will cause a Death in the Family (unless the Heather is white.) Any Tree that is planted within a Circle of Heather will be particularly fruitful. If you burn Heather, you will make it rain.

Heliotrope/Cherry Pie/Turnsole Heliotropium arborescens. Heliotrope symbolises eternal Love and Loyalty.

Hemlock/Beaver Poison/Herb Bennet/Kex/Musquash Root/Spotted Corobane Conium maculatum. Hemlock Nectar enhances the Sense of Flight; in order to achieve this Effect, spread Hemlock over the skin, especially the Genitals. Carry Hemlock and the Heart of a Mole as a Spell to vanquish Foes. The Hemlock is used in Rituals to exorcise Demons and Ghosts, and in Spells to attain the Power of Invisibility. It is also used to induce Astral Projection. Hemp/Cannabis Indica/Ganeb/Ganja/Hanf/Kif/Marijuana/Tekrouri Cannabis sativa. Grind Hemp Seed to a Powder and cast a Pinch of the Powder to each of the four Winds. Burn some of the Powder. This will help in obtaining the Favours of the opposite Sex.

Henbane/Cassilata/Henbell/Hogís-bean/Hyoscyamus/Jupiterís-bean Hyoscyamus niger. Henbane turns Men into Animals. It intensifies Clairvoyance and helps to conjure Spirits. Holly Genus Ilex. Holly Berries cure Chilblains, and the Branches of the Plant prevent Fever, cure Whooping Cough, protect against Lightning, and keep Evil Sorcerers at bay. Cutting down a Holly Tree invites bad Luck, as does sweeping out a Chimney with Holly. Bad Luck is also said to befall those who do not have Holly in their Homes at Christmas/Yuletide.

Holy Ghost Root/Woods Angelica Angelica sylvestris. Holy Ghost Root prolongs Life and protects against Evil Spirits and Witchcraft. Chew it for long Life.

Holy Herb Siegesbeckia orientalis. When applied to a Wound, Holy Herb forms a protective Film like a new Skin.

Holy Thistle/Blessed Thistle Carbenia benedicta. Carry Holy Thistle to bring good Luck. It can also be boiled as a Tea.

Horehound Marrubium vulgare. Horehound cures Dog Bites.

Houndís Tongue Cynoglossum officinale. Houndís Tongue soothes a savage Dog. If rubbed on the Soles of the Dogís Feet, Houndís Tongue keeps him from making too much Noise.

Hydrangea Genus Hydrangea. Hydrangea will cause your Daughters to forever remain Spinsters if it is planted near your House (especially the front Door.) Burning the Bark of the Hydrangea breaks the Hex of any Witch or Sorcerer.

Hyssop Hyssopus officinalis. Hyssop purifies the Body. Bathe in Water in which Hyssop has been infused in order to cleanse the Body of all Disease and Evil Influence. It is good for Coughs and Throat Irritations.

Infusion An Infusion is a Beverage produces by soaking dried Leaves in a hot Liquid, usually Water.

Ivy Hedera helix. The Death of Ivy that grows on the Wall of a House presages the Death of a Family Member who lives inside. Ivy that is brought Indoors will bring in bad Luck, and if picked from the Wall of a Church, it will cause you or a Loved One to suffer a grave Illness in the near Future. Ivy should only be allowed into the House at Christmas/Yuletide, and then nowhere else but in outer Passages and Doorways.

Jasmine/Jessamine Genus Jasminum. The Flowers of the Jasmine are used in Love Magick and Spells which are cast to attract Money or induce Dreams of a Prophetic Nature.

Java Plum/Jambul/Jamum/Rose Apple Eugenia jambolana. The Java Plum relieves Diabetes.

Jezebel Root Carry Jezebel Root to gain Revenge or to put a Curse on Others. It is powerful for attracting Money.

Jewelweed/Slipperweed/Wild Balsam Impatiens aurea. Jewelweed heals Poison Ivy Rashes.

John the Conqueror Root There are three Roots which are called John the Conqueror. Ipomoea jalapa is known as High John the Conqueror Root. Trillium grandiflorum is known as Low John the Conqueror Root, Southern John the Conqueror Root or Wake-Robin. Alpina galanga is known as Chewing John, Little John Chew and Galanga Root. Chew a Piece of Chewing John to remove a Curse or Hex. Whilst concentrating on the Hex or Curse, spit the chewed Root on the Ground. This will cast the Evil Force back on Whoever sent it. High John the Conqueror (Ipomoea jalapa) is usually carried to attract Love and Money, break Hexes, and protect against Evil. It is also used to make all-purpose Anointing Oil. It can also be carried as a good Luck Charm. It brings Luck in Love and Money Affairs.

Juniper Juniperus communis. The Juniper is regarded as a powerful Herb of Protection. It is also carried as an Amulet and used in Spells to guard against Accidents, Supernatural Entities, Enemies, Disease, and Black Magick. It has been used in Exorcism Rites as well as in Love Enchantments. It has the Power to increase Sexual Potency in Men, and when burned as an Incense, it increases Psychic Powers and breaks Curses and the Hexes of Evil Sorcerers.

Kava-Kava/Ava/Intoxicating Pepper Piper methysticum Make Kava-Kava into a Tea and drink it, to protect against Harm and to bring good Luck.

Khuskhus/Vetiver/Vetivert Vetiveria zizanioides. Carry Khuskhus as a Charm for Luck and Success. It repels Insects. It is often used as a Fixative for Potpourris and Incenses. Lime/Linden Tilia europaea. This is not the Citrus Fruit. A soothing Tea or Tisane of Linden is served as a Digestive or a calming Tonic. An Infusion of the Flowers makes an excellent Skin Toner. A Piece of Lime Bark wrapped in a Spiderís Web and set beneath a green Stone in a Ring will guard a Man or Woman who wears it against Plague. Mallow Malva sylvestris. Mallow is an antidote to Ailments caused by Witchcraft.

Mandrake/May Apple/Love Apple/Satanís Apple Atropa mandragora. The Mandrake Root is said to be shaped in the Form of a Human (especially a Man.) A whole Root in the shape of a Man is desired, but if not available, form the Root into the shape of a Man. It is frequently used in sexual Spells. A Mandrake Root will exorcise all Evil Energies, Spirits, and Demons from a House. The Mandrake is a Sleep Inducer, a Pain Killer and an Anaesthesia. Its Berries and Roots heal Bruises. It increases Clairvoyance and heightens the Effects of Magick. Its green Berries energise Charms to arouse Passion or to produce Pregnancy. Its Root restores or increases Virility. The Mandrake prevents Illness and all Danger. Keep Money near the Root to increase the Money. Use powdered Mandrake in Love Potions. Mandrake brings Prosperity if kept on the Person. Burn it as an Incense during the Casting of Spells. Harvest the Root at Midnight during a Full Moon, in order to attain the greatest Efficacy. It is best if cut with a Silver Knife or Sickle. It is said that the Mandrake screams when it is pulled from the Ground, and that the Person who hears the Scream will die, or become Insane. For this Reason, Mandrake is often harvested with the Help of a Hound. However, it is also said that uprooting a Mandrake Root from the Ground is a cure for Lumbago. But those who do pull it up will be cursed with the Inability to have Children. If Mandrake Root is difficult to obtain, Wonder of the World Root (Ginseng) can be substituted.

Marjoram Origanum marjorana. Marjoram defeats Witchcraft. It is also a Love Charm.

Master of the Woods Herb/Woodruff Asperula odorata.. Carry Master of the Woods as a Charm to bring Success and Well-Being in Times of Stress. Warriors wear it to bring Victory.

Meadowsweet/Gravel Root/Queen of the Meadow/Trumpet Weed Spiraea ulmaria. The Meadowsweet is traditionally gathered on Midsummer. It is potent in all Forms of Love Magick and is used as an Herb of Divination to discover the Gender of a Thief.

Mint Genus Mentha. The Leaves of Mint Plants are used for Healing, attracting Money, increasing Sexual Desire, exorcising Evil Entities, and Protection (especially whilst Travelling.) Mint is also used to conjure Beneficial Spirits that aid in Spell casting. The Oil is used for anointing Candles, Ritual Tools, and Healing Poppets.

Mistletoe/Plant of Peace Viscum album. The Mistletoe is Ritually linked to the Druids. It is traditionally cut with a Golden Sickle on Midsummer, or when the Moon is six Days old. Its protective Powers are said to be great, and its Leaves and Berries have been used in various Ways to guard against Fire, Sorcery, Lightning, Poverty, Mischievous Fairies, Illness, bad Luck, Nightmares, and all Forms of Evil. The Mistletoe is also a Plant of Love Magick. A Necklace made of Mistletoe makes the Wearer invisible. Locks can be Magickally opened with Mistletoe. Wounds are healed quickly when Mistletoe is laid upon them, and Conception is aided when it is carried by Women desiring to have Children. Mistletoe is an Antidote for all Poisons and can cure any Disease when worn on a String around the Neck. It promotes Female Fertility and makes unmarried Women dream of their future Husbands when placed beneath their Pillows. Kissing under the Mistletoe at Christmas/Yuletide brings good Luck; however, if a Woman neglects to kiss any Man under the Mistletoe, she will remain unmarried for at least another Year. Lovers who do not kiss each other when under the Mistletoe will become Foes before the Year is over. A House without Mistletoe at Christmas/Yuletide is inviting bad Luck.

Monkís Hood/Aconite Aconitum napellus. Monkís Hood is sacred to the Greek Goddess Hecate. It disturbs the Rhythms of the Heart, producing a Feeling of Falling or Flying. Monkshood is a Protection against Werewolves. It is used to control the Power of Invisibility.

Moonwort Botrychium lunaria. The Moonwort possesses the Power to break Chains and to unshoe Horses that tread over it. A Witch can open any locked Door simply by putting Moonwort into the Keyhole. If Moonwort is placed in a sealed Box or Bag when the Moon is waxing, it will produce Silver by the time the Moon is full. The Moonwort is especially lucky for those born under the Sign of Cancer.

Motherwort Leonora cardiaca. Motherwort is used in Healing Rituals, Counter-Magick, and Immortality Spells. It is also used as an all-powerful Charm against Evil Spirits.

Mugwort/Felon Herb/St. Johnís Plant Artemisia vulgaris. Mugwort shields against the Evil Eye. Wear it to protect a Traveller against tiring, Sunstroke, Poison, wild Beasts, Mischievous Elves, and unfriendly Spirits. It protects Others against Infection, Enemies, Venomous Beasts, Sorcery, and the Evil Eye. It is also reputed to cure Womenís Diseases and Consumption. Mugwort aids in Astral Projection and lucid Dreaming when burned as an Incense or placed under the Pillow. Drink as a Tea before going to Bed to strengthen Psychic and Magickal Dream Powers. A Girdle made of Mugwort can be worn to protect against Harm in the Wilderness, Black Magick, Sickness, Evil Spirits, and bad Luck. Mugwort Girdles also are worn to prevent Backache. Mugwort is also used for breaking Hexes cast on Animals, counteracting Charms, and exorcising Spirits of Disease. Mullein Verbascum thapsus. Dip Mullein in Suet to create a Hagís Taper, a Candle that repels Witches. Use the Hagís Taper as an Incense in Black Magick Rituals. Sprinkle Mullein (especially the Down on the Leaves) on Food as a Love Potion. Keep it in the Home as a Protection against Witchcraft. Mullein guards against Black Magick and Evil Supernatural Entities. It is used for Exorcisms. When carried, it protects against Nightmares, Negativity, Hexes, ill Health, Demons, Cowardice, and attacks by wild Beasts.

Mushroom If any Person should cast their Eyes upon a Mushroom, it will cause the Mushroom to stop growing.

Myrrh Myrrhis odorata. Myrrh is an aromatic Gum Resin. It is often burned with Frankincense as a sacred and Magickal Incense for Purification, Consecration, Healing, Exorcism, and banishing Evil. It aids meditative Rituals. Myrrh is sacred to the Egyptian Sun God Ra and the Goddess Isis. The Oil is used in Magickal Perfumes. It is also used for anointing Candles, Ritual Tools, and Magickal Paraphernalia.

Myrtle Myrtis communis. Myrtle preserves Youth and Love. Drink it as a Tea at least once every three Days. Your Home will be blessed with an Abundance of Love and Harmony if Myrtle grows on each Side of your front Door. For good Luck and a happy Marriage, a Bride should plant the Piece of Myrtle from her Wedding Bouquet in the Garden of her new Home. Flowering Myrtle is considered by many to be the luckiest Plant in the World. Myrtle grows well only if it is planted by a proud Person or an unmarried Woman, and to cut one down will bring Unhappiness, Misfortune, or Divorce to your Home. You will dream about your future Marriage Mate if you sleep with a Sprig of Myrtle directly under your Head.

Nutmeg Myristica fragrans. Carry Nutmeg to cure or prevent Backache, Boils, Lumbago and Rheumatism. It also brings good Luck. If a young Maiden carries Nutmeg, she will end up marrying an older Man.

Oak Quercus robur. The Oak was sacred to the Druids. Its Leaves, Twigs, Bark and Acorns are used for Healing, Female Fertility, Male Potency, good Luck, Divination, maintaining Health, and attracting Money. The Oak guards against Lightning, bad Luck, and all Evil. Carrying an Acorn gives Immortality to those who are true Believers in its Powers. The Oak Tree protects Mortals against Evil, Bewitchment, and the Magickal Power of Fairies. A Worm found inside an Oak Apple is an Omen of Poverty. If you cut down an Oak Tree for any reason, you will receive bad Luck, because avenging Spirits dwell within the Tree. If you catch a falling Oak leaf on the first day of Autumn, you will have good Health throughout the entire Winter. Acorns protect a Home against Lightning when placed in the Windows. An Acorn planted in the dark of the Moon attracts Riches, and carrying Acorns increases Fertility in both Men and Women, wards off all Harm and Illness, and ensures Immortality.

Onion Allium cepa. The Onion is a Protection against the Evil Eye. Cut-up Onion and Onion Peels attract bad Luck when kept in the House. However, if you toss an Onion Skin away, you toss away your Prosperity. Onion Skins should be burned, instead (which also is said to attract Wealth.) Onions can cure the Bites of Dogs, heal Toothaches, ward off Illness, and purify the Air. If you leave a Piece of Onion on the Window Sill, it will absorb all incoming Germs. If you rub the Juice of an Onion on your Schoolmasterís Cane, it will cause the Cane to split when he strikes you with it. If you throw an Onion after a Bride on her Wedding Day, it will ensure that she never Weeps.

Opium Poppy Papaver somniferum. The Opium Poppy inhibits Passion. It also causes Sleep. The Flowers and Seeds are used in Spells, Potions, and Sachets to promote Female Fertility, attract Money, and induce Divinatory Dreams. It is a Plant of good Luck, and it is potent in all Forms of Love Enchantment. Drinking Wine in which Poppy Seeds have been soaked for two Weeks will give the Power to master Invisibility.
