Herbs (A Through G)

Only a trained Practitioner of the Magickal Arts should attempt to use these Herbs as indicated. Those who are not Experts in the Art may encounter dangerous Consequences. Evil Forces or poisonous Effluvia may overcome the Novice.

Acacia Acacia arabica. Acacia attracts Money, inspires Love, wards off Evil, and enhances Psychic Powers.

Adder’s Tongue/Dogtooth Violet Erythronium denscanis. Adder’s Tongue promotes Healing, Divination, Dream Magick, and Lunar Magick.

African Violet Saintpaulia ionantha. African Violet is used as a Protection Amulet. It promotes Spirituality within the Home.

Agrimony/Cocklebur/Sticklewort Agrimonia eupatoria. Agrimony is a Protection against Evil, Negativity, Sorcery and Poison. Place this Flower on a Man’s Head to make him fall into a deep, Sleeplike Trance.

Ague Root/Agueweed Gentianella quinquefolia. Ague Root is a Natural Protection Amulet against Evil and Sorcery. It breaks all Hexes, unlucky Jinxes, and Curses, and it is used in Uncrossing Rituals.

Almond Prunus dulcis. Almonds break Fevers, increase Wisdom, and keep a Person from becoming Intoxicated when drinking Alcohol. If you climb to the Top of an Almond Tree, you can be sure of Success in all of your Business Dealings. If you carry Almonds in your Pockets, you will find buried Treasure. Almonds that are carried when the Moon is waxing will make Money increase.

Aloe Aloe vera. Hang Aloe over the House as a Talisman against Evil Spirits.

Althea/Rose of Sharon Hibiscus syriacus. Althea is a Protection against Negativity and Evil. It facilitates Psychic Abilities, and attracts good Spirits.

Amaranth Genus Amaranthus. Amaranth conjures up Spirits of the Dead. A Wreath of the Flowers, when worn on the head, gives the Power to control Invisibility.

Anemone/Easter Flower/Pasque Flower/Passe Flower/Wind Flower Anemone pulsatilla. Keep Anemone in the Home or on the Person to prevent Illness.

Angelica/Holy Ghost Root Angelica archangelica. Angelica wards against Witches, Enchantment, Sorcerers, and Evil Spells. It is a Charm against the Plague; the Legend is that an Angel came forth and showed Men how to use Angelica against the Plague. It also guards against Evil. Angelica should only be gathered when the Moon is in Leo.

Anise Pimpinella anisum. When chewed, Anise Seed is good for bad Breath. Anise is a Protection against Supernatural Entities and the Evil Eye. It is burned as a Meditation Incense, and is used in Dream Pillows to prevent bad Dreams.

Arbutus Arbutus unedo. Arbutus is a Protection against Evil. It exorcises malevolent Ghosts and Demons.

Asafoetida Ferula asafetida. Carry Asafoetida for Protection against Evil Hexes and Demons. Burn it as an Incense to cause Harm or the Destruction of an Enemy or Rival.

Ash Fraxinus excelsior. Ash is a great Force against Poison and offers Protection against Sorcery and Tempests. Breaking a Bough from an Ash Tree will bring great Misfortune. A Child suffering from Rupture can be cured by being passed through a split Ash Tree; afterwards, the Tree must be plastered with Loam and carefully swathed up. No Serpent will ever lie in the Shade of an Ash Tree.

Aster Genus Aster. Aster is used in Love Enchantments.

Astragalus/Huang Qi/Milk Vetch Astragalus membranaceus. Use the Root of the Astragalus to treat the Common Cold, Loss of Appetite, Diarrhoea and Nervousness.

Balm of Gilead Commiphora opobalsamum. Balm of Gilead is useful in Healing, and as a Protection against Evil. It conjures Spirits. It is also an Herb of Love Magick.

Balsam Poplar/Tacamahac Populus balsamifera. Balsam Poplar relieves persistent Sores and Eczema.

Basil/Witches’ Herb Ocymum basilium. Basil brings Protection and good Fortune when placed in each Room of the House. Sprinkle small Amounts on the Food to gain Help in Affairs of the Heart. Basil attracts Scorpions (Basil Leaves crushed between two Bricks will turn into Scorpions.) Whilst growing, Basil can cause Hatred and Misfortune. It is also believed that Basil will only grow in the Gardens of those who have suffered Misfortune or Physical Abuse. It is used in Love Enchantments and Love Divination, as well as in Exorcism and Purification Rites. Basil protects against Evil and attracts good Luck and Wealth. It also enables Flying.

Bay/Laurel Laurus nobilis. Bay heals, purifies, protects and strengthens. It facilitates Psychic Powers and induces prophetic Visions. Bay breaks Hexes, removes Family Curses, exorcises Demons and Poltergeists, and guards against Lightning, Sickness, Witches, the Devil, and bad Luck. It is used in Love Magick and in Wish Magick. It is bad Luck to burn Wood from a Bay Tree. When all the Bay Trees in a country wither, it is an Omen that the King of that Land will soon die.

Bean Genus Phaseolus. Sleeping in a Bean Field all Night will cause you to experience frightening Nightmares. It can also lead to Insanity. When Beans are in Bloom, the chances of Miners getting injured or killed while on the Job are the greatest. When carried in the Mouth, Beans act as protective Amulets against those who practice the Black Arts.

Belladonna/Deadly Nightshade Atropa belladonna. The inky Juice of Belladonna Berries rubbed on the Skin creates vertiginous Tremors that cause the Sensation of Flight. Belladonna also causes distorted Vision. It is good for cursing Enemies.

Bergamot/Bee Balm/Oswego Tea/Scarlet Monarda Monarda didyma. Bergamot relieves Skin Troubles.

Beth Root/Birthroot/Ground Lily/Indian Balm/Indian Shamrock/Lamb’s Quarters/Wake-Robin Trillium erectum. Cook Beth Root in small Amounts and add to Food to cause a Man to be drawn romantically to the Woman who prepared it.

Betony/Bishopswort Betonica officinalis. Betony protects against Witches and Evil Spirits. Grow it around and about the Premises and sprinkle inside near Doors and Windows; this will Form a protective Wall. Wounded Animals seek Betony out to be healed. It cures Elf Sickness. Betony has Sedative and anti-Spasmodic Properties, and is particularly valuable in the Treatment of Migraines and Nervous Exhaustion.

Birch Betula alba. To protect a Baby from being stolen by Fairies and replaced with an ugly Changeling, place Birch Branches over the Child’s Cradle or Carriage. Crossing your Fingers while standing under a Birch Tree will protect you against all Forms or Sorcery. Birch Trees are believed to ward off the Evil Eye when red Ribbons are tied around their Stems.

Bistort/Adderwort/Oderwort/Osterick/Snakeweed Polygonum bistorta. Bistort is associated with sympathetic Magick. The Roots are an Astringent. Bistort strengthens Psychic Powers, promotes Female Fertility, banishes Evil Sprits and attracts Wealth. It is a powerful Divination Incense when burned with Frankincense.

Bittersweet/Dulcamara/Felonwood/Felonwort/Woody Nightshade Solanum dulcamara. Bittersweet relieves Skin Eruptions and Itch. It is a Protection against Evil, Negativity and Illness. Sleeping with Bittersweet under your Pillow erases painful Memories of past Love from your Mind.

Blackberry Genus Rubus. Blackberry is useful for Healing and for attracting Wealth. It is a powerful Herb of Protection. It is sacred to the Goddess Brigit, Celtic Goddess of Healing, Poetry, sacred Wells and Smithcraft.

Bladderwrack Fucus vesiculosus. Bladderwrack is a common Seaweed. It is useful in Weather working, Wealth Attraction, and Clairvoyance. It is a Protection against Accidents or Illness whilst Travelling by Sea. Bladderwrack is used for Spirit Conjuration (especially for Sea Spirits.)

Blood Root/Coon Root/Indian Paint/Paucon/Red Pucoon/Red Root/ Snakebite/Sweet Slumber/Tetterwort Sanguinaria canadensis. Blood Root is carried as a Protection against Evil Spells. It is also placed near Doorways and Window Sills to protect the Home against Hexes. Throw a Hex back by casting broken Bits of the Root onto the Doorstep of the alleged Witch’s Dwelling. Blood Root attracts Love. It wards off negative Vibrations, protects against Evil and Harm, and guards against Black Magick or Psychic Attacks.

Boneset/Sweating Root/Thoroughwort Eupatorium perfoliatum. Boneset reduces Fever. It also helps the Healing of broken Bones. It protects against bad Spirits and all Evils. It drives away Poltergeists and Demons. Boneset is used to clear haunted Houses. An Infusion sprinkled around the Home will keep unwanted Supernatural Entities from entering or taking up Residence.

Bracken Pteridium aquilinum. Bracken is used for Healing and Female Fertility. It aids in prophetic Dreams. To make Rain fall, burn a Handful of dried Bracken in an outdoor Fire.

Broom/Besom Cytisus scoparius. Broom is used in Love Philtres. It protects against the dark Powers of Sorcery. It is used for Exorcisms, Clairvoyance, and Purification. Use Broom in Spells to raise or calm the Winds. Broom brought into the House (especially when blossoming, in the Month of May) will bring bad Luck or Death to the Head of the Family. If a Branch of green Broom is used to whip a Child, his or her Growth will be permanently stunted.

Buckthorn/Cascara Sagrada/Sacred Bark Rhammus purshiana. Buckthorn is used against Rheumatism and Gout. It also is a Purgative.

Burdock/Beggar’s Buttons/Fox’s Clote/Lappa/Love Leaves/Thorny Burr Arctium lappa. Burdock is a Blood Purifier. It also treats Leprosy. It is used in Aphrodisiacs, Love Magick, and Spells to ward off Negativity and protect against Evil. Burdock wards off Serpents and mad Dogs. It cures Babies of Colic, when a Wreath of the Flowers is placed around the Baby’s Neck.

Burnet/Salad Burnet Sanguisorba minor. The Leaves of the Burnet are added to cool Water for a soothing Lotion for Sunburn.

Calendula/Marigold/Pot Marigold Calendula officinalis. Calendula heals Scars and promotes healthy Tissue. An Oil of the Petals is effective as a Skin Treatment and in Aromatherapy. Calendula deters Flies. This Flower is used as a Magickal Herb to keep Evil Entities at bay (especially when Spell casting or performing sacred Rituals), inspire Prophetic Dreams, strengthen Psychic Powers, attain Success in all Legal Matters, and improve the Vision. For Protection while sleeping, place Calendula Flowers under your Bed before retiring for the Night. This Plant has also been used in Divinations to discover the true Identity of a Thief.

Camomile/Manzanilla/Maythen Anthemis nobilis. Camomile is good for bad Breath. Brew in a Tea to calm the Mind. Stuff a Pillow with Camomile to help relieve Insomnia.

Caraway Carum carvi. A Dish of Caraway placed under a Child’s Bed will offer him or her the greatest Protection against Sorcerers and all Evil Entities of the Night. Caraway placed in or on any object will make it invisible to Thieves.

Catnip Nepeta cataria. Catnip is used in Cat Magick, Healing Rituals, Love Sachets, Fertility Charms, Shapeshifting, and Spells to ensure Happiness at Home. It creates a Psychic Bond with Cat Familiars. It also conjures Beneficial Spirits and attracts good Luck.

Chinese Yam/Cinnamon Vine/Shan Yao Dioscoreae oppositae. Chinese Yam is beneficial for Lungs and Kidneys. It also strengthens the digestive System.

Christmas Rose/Black Hellebore/Christe Herbe/Melampode Helleborus niger. In order to achieve Invisibility, sprinkle Pieces of Christmas Rose before you. You may also toss a Handful of the Powder into the Air whilst reciting certain Incantations.

Cinnamon Cinnamonum zeylanicum. Cinnamon is used in Healing Rituals, Aphrodisiacs, and Spells to attract Money or Sexual Desire. It stimulates Clairvoyant Abilities and raises both protective and spiritual Vibrations. The Oil is used to anoint Candles for Love Goddess Invocations, Love Magick, and Spells of Passion.

Cinquefoil/Five Fingers/Five-Finger Blossom/Five-Leaf Grass/ Potentilla/Sunkfield/Synkefoyle Potentilla reptans. Cinquefoil is used as a flying Potion. Hang over the Bedstead to ward off any Evil of Witchcraft. Bathe the Hands and Forehead nine Times with a Tea of it to wash away Hexes and Curses. The Leaves are carried to increase Wealth, good Health, Love, Arcane Knowledge, and Power. The Cinquefoil is also a Plant of Protection, used to guard against Evil, and break Hexes and unlucky Jinxes. Divinatory Love Dreams are induced by sleeping with Cinquefoil beneath your Head.

Coltsfoot Tussilago farfara. Coltsfoot Leaves are used in Love Spells and Sachets, smoked in a Pipe to produce religious Visions, and used as a Charm to attain Peace and Tranquillity. It is also used to protect Horses against Sorcery and Illness.

Columbine/Lion’s Herb Aquilegia caerula. Columbine is used Magickally by both Males and Females to attract true Love or to retrieve a lost Lover. This Herb is also used in Spells designed to induce Courage.

Comfrey/Ass Ear/Blackwort/Bruisewort/Consound/Knitbone Symphytum officinale. Comfrey heals fractured Bones, Ulcers and open Wounds. It is a Remedy for Haemorrhage of the Lungs.

Cordyceps/Chinese Caterpillar Fungus Cordyceps sinensis. A Worm that turns into a Plant; when the Worm hibernates in Winter, it is consumed by a Fungus which fills the Body of the Worm and transforms it into a Plant. Cordyceps is good for Lungs and Kidneys. It also stops Bleeding and resolves Phlegm.

Coriander Coriandrum sativum. Powdered Coriander Seed taken in Wine stimulates the Passions.

Cough Syrup A Recipe for Cough Syrup: 2 Oz. Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) 2 Oz. Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) 2 Oz. Slippery Elm (Ulmus fulva) 2 Oz. Flax Seed (Linum usitatissimum) 2 Cups Molasses or Honey 1 Cup Brown Sugar Simmer the Herbs in 6 Cups of Water until the Essence is Extracted. Add the Molasses and Sugar, and strain. Return the Liquid to boil until it thickens, stirring with a Wooden Spoon. Take 1 Teaspoon every 2 Hours.

Cowslip/Fairy Cup/Primrose Primula veris. The Cowslip is used to heal Sickness, to guard Houses against unwanted Intruders, to increase one’s physical Charm and Beauty, and to locate lost Objects or buried Treasure.

Crocus Genus Crocus. The dried Flowers of Crocus Plants are used as a Vision-inducing Incense. Crocus has also been used in Spells to attract Love and promote Peace.

Cumin Cuminum cyminum. Mix Cumin with a Loved One’s Food to insure Steadfastness and Devotion.

Curry Powder A Powder made from various Spices (such as Cayenne Pepper, Coriander, Cumin, Fenugreek and Turmeric.) Burn Curry Powder as an Incense at Nightfall to keep Evil Forces and Demons away.

Cyclamen/Sowbread Cyclamen hederaefolium. Cyclamen counters Evil Spells wherever it grows.

Daffodil/Narcissus Narcissus pseudo-narcissus. You will have bad Luck for the rest of the year if the first Daffodil you see in the Spring has its hanging Head turned toward you. Daffodils that are brought into the House will bring bad Luck and will keep Geese, Ducks and Chickens from laying.

Daisy Bellis perennis. The Daisy is used in Love Magick, Love Divinations, and Spells to attract good Luck. To make a lost Lover return to you, sleep with a Root from a Daisy under your Head. Daisies are also used to Magickally make Fairies materialise.

Dandelion Taraxacum officinale. The Dandelion is used as a Magickal Plant of Divination, especially where Matters of Love are concerned. It is used to conjure Spirits, facilitate Clairvoyance, and make secret Wishes come true. A Recipe for Dandelion Wine 1. Pick a Bunch of Flower Heads (the yellow Flowers, not the white Seed Heads.) Put your first and second Finger under the Bloom and pull. Don’t get too much Stem. 2. Remove all of the Stem, then soak the Heads in Water. 3. Remove the Heads from the soaking Water. Separate the Flowers from the Bugs, Grass, etc. 4. For every Gallon of Flower Heads, add two Oranges and one Lemon, cut up with the Rind, and one Quart of boiling Water. 5. Let sit for a Week, stirring every Day. 6. Strain out the solid Matter, leaving only the Liquid behind. 7. Add one and one half Pounds of Sugar that has been boiled in a Pint of Water, then cooled. Add one Cake of Yeast. Let ferment for seven Days. 8. Pour off the Liquid, trying to leave as much of the Deposit as you can. Add another one and one half Pounds of Sugar boiled in a Pint of Water and cooled, and let ferment. After Fermentation has stopped, strain, bottle and seal the Results. 9. Let the Bottles sit for at least six Months. A Year is better. This Recipe also works for Red Clover, Day Lily, Fuschia, Gladiolus, Marigold, Nasturtium, Pansy, Primrose, Rose, and Violet. In the above Cases, you must use only the Petals for the Wine, and make sure that they have not been sprayed with Pesticides.

Devil’s Bone Root/Colic Root/Dioscorea/Rheumatism Root/Wild Yam Dioscorea villosa. Carry small Pieces of Devil’s Bone Root to cure Arthritis and Rheumatism. It is also good for Birth Control.

Dill/Fructus Anethi Anethum graveolens. Dill is repugnant to Witches. The living Plant serves as a Counterspell to Witchcraft. Steeped in hot Wine then drunk, Dill excites the Passions. A Tisane of Dill Leaves or Seed is an effective Digestive. This is an Herb of Protection; it is used as an Herbal Amulet against Demons and Evil Ghosts, to break Hexes, and to ward off Sorcery. When hung over the front Door, it will keep your Home safe from Enemies (especially those who envy you.) In addition to its Powers of Protection, Dill is valued for its Magickal Ability to attract Money and good Fortune. It is a potent Herb in all Forms of Love Magick and in Spells designed to increase Sexual Desire.

Dog Rose Rosa canina. The Dog Rose is a Cure for Dog Bite.

Dragon’s Blood/Blume/Calamus Draco/Draconis Resina/Sanguis Draconis Dragon’s Blood is the Resin of the Palm Daemonorops draco. In solid Stick Form, Dragon’s Blood is carried on the Person for good Luck. To get rid of Curses, Hexes and crossed Conditions, burn it in Powder Form at Midnight, near an open Window, for seven Nights. It is highly valued as an Herb of Love Magick and Protection. It dispels Negativity and is good for the Exorcism of Evil Supernatural Entities. It is said to restore lost Manhood to Men who suffer from an impaired Sex Drive. A Magickal Ink made from Dragon’s Blood Resin is used for drawing Magick Word Squares and Talismans.

Elder/Wicked Wood/Witchwood Sambucus niger. Elder Flowers in Water are recommended for bathing Sun-burnt Skin and the Eyes. The Elder is used Magickally to break the Power of Curses, exorcise Evil Entities, and protect against Negative Forces and Sorcery. It is used in Healing Rituals and Spells to attract good Luck, Love, and Prosperity. The Wood of the Elder is commonly used to make Magick Wands, and to protect a House against Thieves and Serpents. The Berries are said to cure Insomnia when placed under a Pillow. A Spell recited before an Elder Tree is believed to cure Fever. Knots made from Elder Twigs are carried as Charms against Rheumatism. Bad Luck will come your Way if you burn green Elder; the Devil will also enter your House, through the Chimney. Elder Wood will cause a Fire in the Fireplace to die out if placed upon it. When pruning an Elder or cutting it down, you must apologise three Times, otherwise bad Luck will befall you. A Wound caused by an Elder Bush is fatal. Furniture made of Elder Wood is unlucky, and Elder Sticks brought into the House will cause Illness in the Family, and Misfortune. If you have Furniture made from the Wood of the Elder Tree in your Home, you will be haunted by the Dryad who lived in its Branches. Elder is said to ward off and cure Disease. It offers Protection against all Forms of Evil, Saddle Sores, and Lightning, and its Leaves repel Hexes and Curses when they are gathered on the last Day of April and worn or carried as a Charm. To see Elder in a Dream is an Omen of Sickness in the near Future.

Elecampane/Elf Dock/Elfwort Inula helenium. The Elecampane is an Herb of Elfin Magick. It attracts Love and is potent in all Amorous Enchantments. It offers Protection against Evil, Psychic Attack, and Demonic Possession. When burned as an Incense, Elecampane strengthens Clairvoyance and Scrying Abilities.

Endive Cichorium endivia. Endive is a Love Elixir. Carry Pieces to assure the constant Love of the opposite Sex. Grind it into a Powder and add to the Food or Drink of a Lover to serve as a Love Philtre.

Ergot/Claviceps Claviceps purpurea. A Fungus that occurs as a Club-shaped Body replacing the Seed of a Grass, such as Rye. Ergot helps Women to manage the Pains of Labour and Delivery. It is also a Flying Agent.

Eryngo/Sea Holly/Sea Holme/Sea Hulver Eryngium maritinum. Grind Eryngo into small Pieces or Powder, and add to Food as a Love Tonic. A Woman can wear the Plant to insure the Love of a Man.

Fennel Foeniculum vulgare. The Leaves and Seed of the Fennel Plant make a Digestive Tea that helps cure Flatulence. The Seeds can be chewed to stave off Hunger and relieve Digestion. Fennel hung over the Doors and Windows of your House on Midsummer’s Eve will keep all Evil Spirits, Sorcerers, Demons, and the Devil away. Fennel Seeds placed in the Keyholes of Doors will also keep Ghosts from entering a House.

Fenugreek/Bird’s Foot/Greek Hay-Seed Trigonella foenumgraecum. Fenugreek alleviates Stomach Troubles. It aids the work of the Kidneys and Liver, and stops Gas Pains and Belching. It helps to heal Ulcers, Swellings, Blood Poisoning and Gangrene. It relieves high Fevers. Use Fenugreek as a Gargle for sore Throats.

Fern (Male Fern)/Devil’s Bush Dryopteris felix-mas. Male Fern expels Tapeworms. Carry Fern Seeds in order to be Invisible. A Philtre of the Male Fern Root makes the one who drinks it fall in Love with you. Sweet Fern Leaves relieve Itching.
